Plastic Free July

In celebration of Plastic Free July, this month is a great time to reassess simple habits and make a swap or two (or more) to help eliminate minimal-use plastic products in our everyday routines.

Living sustainably is often represented by cutting out plastic straws, recycling cans, and bringing a reusable bag to the grocery store. These are indeed extremely helpful eco-friendly ways, but true sustainability touches each and every part of the day—especially daily health activities like flossing and brushing. It may come as a surprise to you, but how we take care of our teeth is actually destroying the planet.

At Goodwell, we know that fully sustainable oral care is possible, and a little innovation goes a long way. Since it’s recommended that we replace our toothbrush multiple times a year for optimal oral health, this practice has led to an unmanageable amount of plastic waste - toothbrushes - in landfills and oceans.

A few fast and uneasy facts:
  • Plastic can take more than 1,000 years to biodegrade, which means that every plastic toothbrush ever produced is still hanging out with us here on Earth.
  • More than 1 billion plastic toothbrushes are sold every year, meaning the same number of plastic toothbrushes are discarded around our planet, either in landfills, waterways, or littered elsewhere. It’s worth a reminder that just because we throw something away, doesn’t mean it’s gone. It has to go somewhere, and that somewhere is actually where it spends the majority of its lifetime (you know like the 1,000 years just mentioned in the first bullet!).
  • Most toothbrushes are made of mixed harsh plastics that are extremely difficult to break down, and with bristles made of non-biodegradable nylon. These indestructible plastic toothbrushes are annually responsible for over 50 million pounds of annual plastic waste.

For those history lovers, this article by National Geographic explains how the modern toothbrush we know today has only existed since 1938, when nylon was invented. Nylon offered stronger, cleaner and longer-lasting bristles than previous all-natural options.

While we’ve come a long way since the days of chewing sticks, there hasn’t been any real innovation in over 80 years, and it’s time to eliminate plastic from our daily routines and make the swap to zero waste, biodegradable and sustainable oral hygiene products.
