If you’ve looked closely at the status reports for individual parts in recent updates, you may have noticed that the spring motor has been in the engineering review phase for a while now. After many, many rounds of prototypes, our main vendor tripled the per-unit cost, which forced us to find an alternate source. A cost increase on a small part wouldn’t be such a problem, but the spring motor was already the most expensive component, leaving us little choice but to look elsewhere. To put the math in perspective, if the motor originally cost $3 and was tripled to $9, our total cost for just that part in a 10,000-unit production run would go from $30k to $90k… which is too much for us to absorb. The good news is that we have a great partner working on it now, and we’ll have their pre-production samples in hand shortly. Costs are much closer to our expectations, and we’re confident in their quality controls.

In plastic part news, all the tooling from our Chicago injection molder is scheduled to be ready for T2 part testing on January 15. At that point, they will produce another set of all the parts for us to review and test assembly. We didn’t bore you with all the little details that needed to be fixed in each plastic part, but we can share more of that in the future if anyone is interested! We’re expecting the majority of issues to have been dealt with in these T2 parts, and then the tooling will just need final surface finishing before mass production.

The idea behind showing progression in a GANTT chart is to give you transparency into what we're working on, broken down to the component level, so you know on a bi-weekly basis what has been done, and what is left to do.
